Making a World of Difference at Home and Abroad: Prosocial Activities and Aspirations of Returned International Volunteers ARNOVA Conference Paper, 2019

This paper documents the long-term impacts of international development volunteering (IDV) in relation to the prosocial behaviours, careers and community activities of returned international volunteers (RVs). We consider transformations arising from IDV opportunities that lead to prosocial priorities, including increased commitment to global assistance and changes in prosocial study or career choices focused on international and community development. Findings from a 2018 survey completed by 450 Canadian RVs show how IDV can contribute to global civic engagement, and more broadly, to building a more empathetic and justice-oriented society dedicated to addressing the causes and consequences of global poverty and inequality.
