Models of International Volunteering Trends, innovation and good practice

This research report has been prepared for Comhlámh by Volunteer and Service Enquiry Southern Africa (VOSESA). Comhlámh, the irish association of volunteers and development workers, seeks to foster good practice and critical engagement in volunteering and action for development. The organisation’s vision is of development workers and international volunteers working in solidarity for a just, equitable and sustainable world. To support its objective of promoting good practice in volunteering for development, Comhlámh commissioned vosesa to undertake a study that would give an overview of the range of models of international volunteering in action globally, documenting examples of goodpractice and innovation. Specific objectives included:

  • identify different models of international volunteering;
  • Look at how these models contribute to development;
  • Highlight examples of good practice and innovation within international volunteering; and
  • determine emerging trends and growth areas.
