Online social networking has huge potential for development organisations, says Pete Cranston.

The breathless successes of this current Internet cycle are the online social networking platforms such as MySpace, Bebo and FaceBook along with online content-sharing spaces such as YouTube and Flickr.

People under 35 make up the overwhelming majority of online Social Networking platform users – which is of course one of the main reasons why they are important for NGOs. It also means however that the majority of decision makers in NGOs are not active participants in a trend that is an important part of the lives of increasing numbers of people worldwide.
